Bishop Gerard Frey dies at the age of 93
Posted August 16, 2007 , By Joshua LeBlanc
Bishop Gerard Frey, bishop emeritus of the Diocese Lafayette died today after a lengthy illness. Bishop Frey was born in 1914 in New Orleans, LA. In 1938 he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New Orleans where he served as a priest along with his brother, Msgr. Andrew Frey. He was eventually appointed Bishop of Savannah, GA in 1967. After five years in that post he was transferred to the Diocese of Lafayette where his brother, Fr. Jerome Frey, is a priest.
During his 17 years as bishop of Lafayette, Bishop Frey undertook a reorganization of the entire diocese. He was also bishop when the Diocese of Lake Charles was created from the Lafayette Diocese. Unfortunately, it was during Bishop Frey’s administration that the clergy sex scandal rocked the Diocese of Lafayette which eventually led to Bishop Harry Flynn, whom Bishop Frey co-consecrated, being named coadjutor bishop in 1986. Bishop Frey retired as bishop of Lafayette in 1989. May the Angels of God receive his soul, and present him to God the Most High! May He Rest in Peace.
