I have to beg the question

Posted August 19, 2005 , By Joshua LeBlanc

Because of the recent issue with Cindy Sheehan, I have noticed a few bloggers mentioning the fact, as noted by Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, that only one member of Congress has a child in Iraq.  I don’t think this is a fair observation to make.  Why?  Because a parent can’t control what his/her child does.  I think what is fair is to look at the number of members of Congress who actually served time in the military.   Let’s look at something they can control.  The Senate CRS Report notes that 153 members of Congress have served in the military in some capacity.  Looking at that, I think to make the claim that Congressmen don’t care about the people they send to Iraq is somewhat absurd.  As we can see the individuals who make the decision to go to war with Iraq are people who have actually served in both war time and during peace.
