Out for the Catholic Church

Posted June 24, 2005 , By Joshua LeBlanc

As if there wasn’t enough proof that the media has it out for the Catholic Church, this article incorrectly states that Edgar Ray Killen, who was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison for the deaths of three men in 1964, was a priest.  While it doesn’t mention Catholic, most people wouldn’t assume he’s an Episcopal priest.  While the truth is that he was a baptist preacher, and part-time at that, it seems that this media source automatically assumed that since something bad happened it must have been a priest.  Not only should Catholics be offended, I think baptists would be offended as well.  Don’t ever call a baptist preacher a priest.  You could get your eyes clawed out for that one.

It’s possible that it’s a translation issue, since this article seems to be the English-language version of a Turkish publication. Perhaps they have no clear distinction between “priest” and evangelical “preacher” in their vocabulary.
