“Personally Opposed” to abortion a cop out says Wilmington Bishop
Posted September 29, 2005 , By Joshua LeBlanc
Valerie Schmalz of Ignatius Press recently interviewed Bishop Michael Saltarelli, Bishop of Wilmington, DE and published his statement that being "personally opposed" to abortion while advocating the right to abortion is a cop out. Bishop Saltarelli told Ignatius Insight that "I think for too long we have been silent and our people have taken that silence as part of an acquiescence of the status quo."
I don’t know much about Bishop Saltarelli but by simply looking at his picture on the diocesan website he looks like a no-nonsense kind of guy. This good bishop has his the proverbial nail on the head here. For too long in this country bishops have been silent on many issues but especially pro-life ones. Human Life Internationa will tell you that they have gotten assistance in every country, not only from simple clergy, but members of the hierarchy as well. You will also find that the country where they have met the greatest resistance to the pro-life message is in the United States. In countries like Kenya and Argentina, Cardinals and other bishops are lining up to give their support. I can’t tell you how many pictures I have seen with various members of the HLI staff with Cardinal x and Bishop y — all of other countires. I don’t think an HLI official next to an American prelate - except for Archbishop Burke - exists.
I have always said that the problem isn’t the amount of good bishops we have in the United States. We have a good number of really good bishops - Chaput, Bruskewitz, Burke, Rigali, Hughes, etc. The problem is that all of these bishops keep acting as individuals instead of ganging together to stop travesties like abortion. Look at Gumbleton. When this man wanted something done he would get together with his other cronie bishops and they would all back each other up. We have a Conference of Catholic Bishops that isn’t united mainly because some bishops want to be politicians rather than a shepherd of souls.
